Let’s talk about the Power Rangers. And a lot of it. (Little tip, hit J to skip to the next post) And for the video, thee first 7 minutes is all Might Morphin’ Power Rangers themes over the 3 series.
This show was my childhood, or some of it whilst I was growing up. The rest being dominated by Pokémon and Digimon mostly. Most of my early life was glued to Fox Kids until it became Jetix, then I expanded a little more into Disney territory and Cartoon Network, during the Fox Kids era though I also discovered Escaflowne and Shinzo (Mushrambo in Japanese), two animes I still love today.
Power Rangers came at a great time, I was young, I loved seeing people fighting using martial arts and I had not yet discovered Dragon Ball. I also had a love of giant robots, guess that’s where Escaflowne influenced me. Power Rangers hit every checklist in my young mind for epicness, I had several of the toys spreading over a few of the series. My main problem was to me they moved way too fast. See in my younger days we only had one TV that could access Sky. Therefore I had the control taken from me very often, having to sneak downstairs at 4am on a saturday to catch up on TV shows, as such I relied on marathon days and other such events, which mixed an matched episodes, so one episode I would be watching Time Force, then Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, then Space, then Lightspeed Rescue. It was confusing. Eventually I sort of gave up until Wild Force was released in which I fell back pretty hard.
Of course around those years I couldn’t watch TV all that much and whilst I got freeview in my room, I couldn’t watch Jetix anymore and mum and my stepdad definitely didn’t allow me the Sky remote (to be fair I did chew off all the rubber at the back). After that I randomly caught an episode or two of other seasons over the years, Wild Force, Ninja Storm, Dino Thunder etc. but could never get back into it. Now present day.
I am admittedly a bigger child now than I was when I was a kid, but I recently found Power Rangers on Netflix, all seasons. So after blitzing through Jungle Fury, Mystic Force, Dino Thunder, Wild Force and Lightspeed Rescue I can safely say I still love Power Rangers. For several reasons, for one I didn’t realise until recently it launched the career of one of my favourite voice actors, no matter how much I make fun of him Johnny Yong Bosch is a fantastic VA and to see him kick ass in live action instead of voice is awesome. Another thing is I forgot how awesome giant robots were. I have a serious dislike for them now and I’ll touch on that another time. Once those zords come out, it is on big time and it’s awesome. Also Jason David Frank is fantastic. Seeing him last as long as he did somehow, I don’t know if it was love for the series or a huge paycheck but it’s great to see him again and again.
Oh and Linkara’s History of Power Rangers also had a small part on my rekindled love. But it really is great to step back in time to the old series whether it be shifting into Turbo, setting control to outer space or even if it’s just time for time force. Power Rangers is still awesome.
Also I loved Jungle Fury, I feel I am alone on this.
